PLANNED PROJECTS:
Repairs and improvements totalling £224,000.00 are required. This figure assumes that no further Major or Emergency work is required before completion of the planned work. Below is a breakdown of repairs needed
South Face of Tower and Turret Roof |
£24,000.00 |
This total figure assumes that no further Major or Emergency work needs to be carried out before completion of the above. However, we already know that there is a problem with the pointing on the wall that divides the Old Graveyard from in-use one. Unfortunately this wall is part of the original build of the castle and was part of the surround to the walled garden. As it is classed as an ancient monument all sorts of regulations will apply. |
Repointing and repairing metalwork in the window apertures in the Bell Chamber plus replacing/repairing the oak louvres |
*£80,000.00 |
Internal paving repairs |
£5,000.00 |

£5,000.00 |
Preserving North, West and South Doors |

Total |

The starred (*) items are calculated estimates at 2006’s prices. The time taken to raise funds through Grants etc plus the high probability that further work will be required when areas are opened up for repair will only add to the cost.
One of the big disadvantages of having to look after any Listed Building is that the work that is carried out has to be done by Approved companies. This means that there are only a limited number of companies authorised to do the work.
WORK IN PROGRESS:
The final figures for the repair and re-pointing of the South face of the Tower and the repair to the roof of the stair turret have now been received and the work authorized. It is hoped that it will start by mid summer 2007.
We are waiting for the final figures for the repair to some of the internal paving and brickwork by the boiler house, but again, it is hoped that this will be completed before the winter.
The above “Grant Aided” work is being financed from Church Funds and Grants applied for before the formation of “The Friends” Other work is being carried out during the year to take the building forward. Some of this is due to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and the rest is for the “beautification” of the building.
Work on the Boiler house now completed - March 2008.
